New to EDI? Here's the plain-English version

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is just a standardized text format businesses use to send each other structured documents — invoices, purchase orders, shipping notices, insurance claims — without emailing a PDF back and forth. X12 is the EDI standard used mostly in the US (identified by transaction-set numbers like 837 for a healthcare claim or 850 for a purchase order). EDIFACT is the international equivalent used mostly outside the US (identified by message names like INVOIC for an invoice).

Either way, the raw file looks like a dense wall of codes and symbols — ISA*00*...~GS*HC*...~ — because it's built for computer systems, not humans. This tool reads that structure automatically and turns it into an ordinary table you can search, filter, and open in Excel — you don't need to know the EDI spec to use it.

How to Convert an EDI File to CSV or Excel

  1. 1Drop your EDI file (X12 837, 835, 850, or EDIFACT INVOIC/ORDERS) into the box above, or try one of the free example files.
  2. 2Review the parsed table — segments, elements, and values are automatically detected and laid out in a searchable, filterable grid.
  3. 3Export to CSV or Excel with one click — the file downloads directly from your browser, ready to open in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet tool.

Because everything runs client-side, this EDI to CSV/Excel converter works for teams handling healthcare claims (837), remittance advice (835), purchase orders (850), and EDIFACT commercial invoices (INVOIC) who want a fast, free way to turn raw EDI text into a spreadsheet — without sending sensitive business data to a third-party server.

Who Uses an EDI to CSV Converter?

Anyone who receives raw EDI files but doesn't run a full EDI translator platform. That includes billing and revenue-cycle teams opening 837 claim files, accounting and finance teams reconciling 835 remittance advice against bank deposits, procurement and supply-chain teams reviewing 850 purchase orders from trading partners, and logistics/import-export teams checking EDIFACT INVOIC commercial invoices. In all of these cases, the underlying need is the same: turn a dense, delimiter-separated text file into rows and columns a human (or Excel) can actually read.

Why Use a Browser-Based EDI Converter Instead of Desktop Software?

Traditional EDI translator software (e.g., full VAN/EDI-integration platforms) is built for ongoing, automated B2B transaction processing — usually at a monthly or per-transaction cost, and usually requiring IT setup. If you just need to open, inspect, or convert an individual EDI file to CSV or Excel occasionally, that's a lot of overhead for a simple task. This tool skips the installation and subscription entirely: it runs instantly in any modern browser, requires no account to preview, and keeps your file on your own device the entire time — an approach especially useful for one-off audits, spot-checks, customer support investigations, or occasional trading-partner file reviews.

Which EDI Transaction Sets Does This Support?

The parser reads the ISA/GS/ST header (X12) or UNA/UNB/UNH header (EDIFACT) to auto-detect delimiters and structure, so it works on any standard X12 or EDIFACT file — not only the four highlighted below. Segments it recognizes are labeled with their plain-English name; any segment outside its built-in dictionary is still parsed and exported correctly, just labeled generically.

Commonly tested & fully labeled

X12 837 (Healthcare Claim) · X12 835 (Remittance/ERA) · X12 850 (Purchase Order) · EDIFACT INVOIC (Commercial Invoice)

Also supported (common segments recognized)

X12 856 (ASN), 810 (Invoice), 820 (Payment/Remittance), 855 (PO Acknowledgment), 204 (Load Tender), 214 (Shipment Status) · EDIFACT ORDERS, DESADV — no example file provided yet, but the parser reads these correctly

Built on Local-First Technical Transparency

Every byte of your file stays inside your browser tab. No third-party server ever touches your EDI content. See exactly how to verify this yourself →

No Server Uploads

EDI files are processed locally in your browser and are not sent to this website. Everything happens in local browser memory and disappears when you close the tab.

Private by Design

No user accounts, cloud databases, or remote file-storage systems are used. There is nothing on our side that stores or retains your file content.

Pricing Questions, Answered

Is there a recurring charge or subscription?

No. This is a single one-time payment of $29.99. There is no subscription, no recurring billing, and no automatic renewal of any kind — you pay once via Gumroad and the full export features stay unlocked on that browser indefinitely.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 50MB are supported, both before and after purchase. Because parsing happens in your browser's memory rather than on a server, very large files depend on your device's available memory rather than any artificial cap we impose.

Is there a limit on how many files I can convert?

No. Once unlocked, you can upload and export as many EDI files as you like, with no per-file charge and no monthly quota — it's a single payment for unlimited use on that browser going forward.

Which EDI formats are supported?

ANSI X12 (auto-detected via the ISA/GS/ST header) and UN/EDIFACT (auto-detected via UNA/UNB/UNH). X12 837, 835, and 850 and EDIFACT INVOIC are fully tested with dedicated example files; the parser's segment dictionary also recognizes common segments from X12 856, 810, 820, 855, 204, 214, and EDIFACT ORDERS/DESADV. See our X12 viewer and EDIFACT viewer guides for details on each standard.

Can I use it on a different computer after buying?

Yes. After payment, Gumroad emails you a licence key. On any other computer or browser, open the unlock dialog and click “Already purchased? Restore it here”, paste that key, and full export unlocks on that device. Your purchase is tied to the key in your email, not to one browser — so clearing your cache or switching machines never loses access. Keep the purchase email; it's your proof of purchase.

Is there a refund policy?

All sales are final, because the unlock is delivered in full on payment, and the four free sample files let you fully verify parsing quality before you pay. See the full Refund Policy for details and legally-mandated exceptions in some jurisdictions.

Can a team share one license?

One purchase is intended for one person, who can activate it across their own devices with the emailed licence key. There is currently no separate multi-seat or team license product — each person who needs full export access completes their own $29.99 one-time purchase.

Does this work on Mac, iPhone, or Chromebook? Can I upload multiple files at once?

Yes on device — this runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, or iPad, with nothing to install. To be upfront about a current limit: it processes one file at a time; there's no bulk/batch upload feature yet, so very large multi-file jobs aren't a fit today.

Does this convert EDI to XML?

Yes. Alongside CSV, Excel, and JSON, there's an Export to XML option. The XML output is nested by segment rather than being a flat table, so each <Segment> carries its ID and description as attributes with its elements as children — a structure downstream XML tooling can actually traverse. Like the other export formats, it's generated entirely in your browser.
